Meetings

Meeting 1 –

The group jointly prioritised the evidence from the NIHR moving forward document – enabling this to be manageable for patients, commissioners and clinicians. It was decided to create a survey to capture current use of evidence in clinical practice.

Video feedback from attendees was taken, you can view these here.

The group discussed Patient and Public Involvement for the project

Meeting 2 –

The aim of the second meeting was to take the top five priorities identified in the first meeting (STarT Back, IMPaCT Back, BEST, ESCAPE Pain and SWAP) and to explore how the group could translate this intro meaningful actions. Research and Implementation leads presented each of the five trials with a view to giving the key methods, results and top tips for implementation.

Video feedback from attendees was taken, you can view these here.

Meeting 3

The aim of the third meeting was to translate evidence identified from the 1st and 2nd meetings into high level pathways for the management of Low Back Pain across Staffordshire, namely STarT Back, IMPaCT Back and BEST. The group reviewed the survey created after meeting 1 to capture current use of evidence in clinical practice.

Project planning, communication strategies and the local back pain patient pathway were discussed. Video feedback from attendees was taken, you can view these here.

MEETING 4

The aim of the fourth meeting was to translate evidence from Moving Forward into high-level pathways for Osteoarthritis. The group also reviewed the back pain pathway devised in meeting 3, and discussed progress so far, the communication strategy and the survey of clinical practice.

Meeting 5

The fifth meeting again welcomed patients, clinicians, researchers, and commissioners. The group looked at Patient and Public Involvement in the project, paying particular attention to the co-production ladder, to determine how to improve.

At this point, the Community of Practice had success at embedding evidence into practice for those with chronic knee pain and low back pain.  The group updated and refreshed clinical pathways for low back pain and osteoarthritis in light of the physiotherapy research evidence, presenting them visually and shared learning through Twitter.

Video feedback from attendees was taken, you can view these here.

MEETING 6

The Community of Practice considered the new context of COVID and proposed keeping a focus on the 5 priorities; STarT Back, IMPaC Back, SWAP, ESCAPE Pain and BEST. These five priorities were considered in light of the challenges that services were facing during the pandemic. The group proposed a short term focus on one priority and to support the virtual implementation through FCPs and the broader Primary Care team.

Meeting 7

Discussions during the seventh meeting highlighted the importance of the First Contact Practitioners. They are important additions to the MSK workforce and have great opportunity to ensure patients receive evidence-based care. The group also raised the issues of: allowing staff time to innovate, engaging patients to a greater extent and utilising technology to assist practice.

Welcome to Moving Forward

Implementing evidence based innovations across Staffordshire

Thanks for joining us on our journey to lead the implementation of the NIHR Moving Forward Themed Review into clinical practice across Staffordshire.

The Impact Accelerator Unit (IAU) at Keele University is working alongside the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) to roll out and implement the NIHR Themed Review: Moving Forward Physiotherapy for Musculoskeletal Health and Wellbeing across Staffordshire.

This website will detail progress made by those co-creating the solutions to implementation, namely the Community of Practice (CoP) and the LINK Group (Lay Involvement in Knowledge Mobilisation).  The Community of Practice brings together clinicians (GPs, allied health professionals), commissioners (CCG), patients and the impact accelerator unit to consider and prioritise the finding of the ‘Moving Forward’ themed review.

The Lay Involvement in Knowledge Mobilisation (LINK) group is a group of patient/public representatives from a range of organsiations who are committed to supporting the translation of best evidence for patients and public. The LINK group are working with the CSP and NIHR to develop a patient and public version of the Moving Forward review, so that people can access good quality evidence based information and know about why they are receiving the treatment they are receiving.

Over a period of 12 months the LINK (Lay Involvement in Knowledge Mobilisation) group will meet three times and the Community of Practice will meet four times. The LINK group are part of the wider Community of Practice. The work of both groups will inform the other.

The process is overseen by senior members of Keele University and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy to ensure that the project is delivered on time, to budget and to a high standard.

Where are we now?

We have published a survey to scope out the local NHS landscape to see where we can implement best practice into clinical pathways. Please fill this out here if you are based in Staffordshire: https://form.jotformeu.com/90932879681372
